    2011-04-01: Q-DAS Product during the machine acceptance process

    Did you know that on a global basis, the Q-DAS product qs-STAT has been used to accept and qualify engine and transmission manufacturing facilities worth in excess of several billions of Euros? 

    Many automotive corporations like Volkswagen, General Motors, Opel, Ford, BMW, Mercedes Car Group etc. have developed guidelines for acceptance modalities when acquiring machine and production facilities. All of those are based on statistical procedures for the calculation of capability indices used as the decision-making basis. During the acceptance procedure, a number of components are manufactured on the brand new facility or production line with the specified characteristics measured and then evaluated statistically with qs-STAT. Based on the resulting capability indices and the corresponding graphical displays, the decision will be made whether the facility passed the acceptance test or needs to be reworked. This process is followed for the initial start-up at the OEM manufacturer as well as for the ultimate application at the customer’s site.

    The automated statistical evaluations based on the respective company guideline, make it possible to save considerable costs during the acceptance. Whereas previously, several quality managers accompanied the acceptance at the manufacturer’s as well as in their own company, today the acceptance is more and more the responsibility of the OEM manufacturer, who carries out the acceptance procedure mostly independently and provides the results (calculated with qs-STAT) to the customer. Besides the considerable cost savings, it is also possible to improve the quality of the facilities and thus greatly lower the error rate during the initial start-up.  

    All the mentioned guidelines are based on DIN EN ISO 21747 (in future DIN EN ISO 22514-2) regarding the determination of the capability indices. Some years ago, this norm created a worldwide standard for the determination of capability indices, thus providing a definite calculation base for the manufacturers of production facilities as well as for their customers.  Especially through the creation and specification of the corresponding company guidelines it was now possible to determine specific conditions and visualize them in qs-STAT, which has helped facilitate the acceptance process significantly. The calculation method and limit values are no longer typical topics for discussion between customer and supplier and the team now is free to focus on improvements.

    The measurement systems used during the acceptance procedure are linked either directly to qs-STAT, or via data transfer in the AQDEF format.  This makes a quasi real time evaluation possible, which can enable the direct decision regarding the capability of the facility or uncover weak points in individual characteristics. For this purpose, the graphical displays prepared by Q-DAS that allow diverse views of the respective situations, are very helpful.

    Capability studies according to MSA 4 or the determination of the extended measurement uncertainty according to the VDA 5 manual and the ISO 22614-7 (not yet published) can be used to prove the capability of measurement systems. The procedures used for this are part of the Q-DAS product solara.
